Open a startup or work in the corporate market?

Presently, this is a very pertinent question for many, principally to graduation students from the courses of technology and marketing, as the term startup is very utilized, used by those professionals who see companies being bought and sold by tons of money doing, apparently, “simple” things.

The word Startup became sexy in market and announce yourself as the “founder” brings social prestige, fact that in the older days could be seen as that “nerd guy”, whose wouldn’t probably make money.

For many the term is widely known, however, we must observe exceptions when we explain what a startup is. Even with the existence of various concepts, which is most applicable, in my opinion, is “Startup is a company that haven’t found its business model to solve the problems in question and will invest time and efforts to find, trying various ways quickly.”

In fact, not just the nerd’s place changed in society. Our relation with work is one of the things that transformed the most. Did you ever repair? In this super connected world, it is hard do not answer an e-email from work in your rest time, and the dichotomy between home and work doesn’t seems to exist any longer, don’t you agree?

Well, some entrepreneurs may be reading this article and think that this relation never existed and, indeed, they are correct. Owners of companies, since their founding, have their personal and professional lives mixed in a single element, but, for most people, the reality seems a little bit different: the moment to go home was the time of disconnect from work.

If we think about this theme, we’ll perceive that today the companies asks for a “owner of the business” professional, as he’ll deliver to the job more than 8 daily hours on the office, even if is not officially. Certainly, the relation that people establish about their consideration concerning companies to work proofs this.

Brand Intents, life quality and better relation between personal and professional life are common evaluated terms by professionals when the moment of choose a company to work comes, since being collaborator means mixture life and work. This is what IBM Institute for Business Value affirms in Connected Generation Research, which researched various CEOs and students around the world and compared their vision about some topics, revealing what students believe that concerns people in the work.


Besides the study, to test if this is the truth, in every seminary (four until this moment, with 300 people on average) that I’ve done about this subject, I ask in which of the companies below people would like to work.


In 90-95% of the cases, people prefer the second one. In sequence, to keep the test, I affirm that the second company pays 20% less than the first one (this is not true, it’s just a test) and so I ask again, and, still, the major part keep the second option. In all seminaries I ask why, and affirm that this is not about a funny environment, since the answers are related to the sensation of “feeling at home” at work.

I believe that brands already know that they need to work to understand the professionals of today and correspond their yearnings, since, if he’s expected to deal with the “owner of the business” attitude, uninterruptedly, the new collaborator asks himself: “why I won’t have my own business?”

There are some important questions to answer the quoted ask. The first one is: “are you ready to entrepreneur?”. IBGE (Geography and Statistic Brazilian Institute) points that 48% of the companies close in less than three years, and I perceive that this number will be bigger, as this data belongs to 2010. And why is this happening?

The reasons to entrepreneur are various, and I have seen in market people that do not want to work in this relation of acting as “owner” being collaborator, trying to create companies, even if they don’t have the respective skills for it. An advice: as this is an arduous process, try to evaluate yourself well, or this won’t be an entrepreneur, but an adventure.

Another interesting study comes from Funders and Founders, which researched in various great companies around the world what was the age of the founder when started his/her own business. Repair that just few of them started before 25 years old. Why?

People who most know about a specific subject are those who can see possibilities of improving and create something different or entrepreneur, in fact. We love some subjects too. For instance, I love trips, and considering another graduation or professional experience, I can see opportunities in the segment that those extremely involved and addicted to its functioning can’t do clearly. Did you ever repair how children ask disconcerting questions? They’re not addicted to the “how it should be”.
